Read Speed Racing started over 35 years ago in the United Kingdom when Jim Read ( Steve's Father) and sons formed "Team Readspeed" and campaigned vehicles in a number of classes which culminated in a Pro Comp/ Top alcohol Car. Some of the early Team Readspeed achievements are as follows;
After a break Team Readspeed was reborn as Read Speed Racing in 2006 by Steve Read and his long time partner Heather Bond. They went searching for a late model chassis on which to build a Championship "winning" team. Being self funded, purchases were very carefully considered and a choice was made to formulate a tune-up that gave quick but consistent times that did not hurt parts. A rolling chassis was sourced in the US and subsequently purchased by Heather. After a few setbacks the team debuted in January 2007 at Willowbank Raceway. A semi final finish resulted but the team had a problem with the breaking of supercharger belts. Re engineering the idler bracketing resolved this problem. The next meeting was the Summernationals at WSID in Sydney, where consistency won the day with the Readspeed entry beating the fastest 3 cars in the country to win it's first major meeting. The next race was the Nitro Champs again in Sydney resulting in a runner-up position, smoking the tyres in the final causing a loss of traction. This was a dream start for a new crew. The next 2 meetings garnered the teams first No 1 qualifier position, but semi final losses at each event. Electrical gremlins had set in so the car was stripped and rebuilt by Colin our car chief and the crew. The crew-chief on the car informed Steve and Heather he did not have the time to devote to the operation and resigned from his role. Steve and Colin took over as a united team drawing from each others strengths and knowledge. The following January RSR qualified in the No 2 spot but in the semi final Steve accidentally deployed the parachute on the burn out and was shut down on the start-line. Later that night RSR were given the opportunity to do a test pass and set the low elapsed time of the meeting. The Summernationals 08 saw the car to another final round but having hurt 2 engines RSR were unable to contest the final. For the rest of the season RSR went into test mode with the purchase of a new supercharger, late style cylinder heads, uprated fuel pump and a billet block. Read Speed Racing has collected a lot of data which will assist the team for a full scale assault on the ANDRA Championship this season.
