Steve Read
Owner/Driver

Steve is a unique person in the world of drag racing having raced and won on 3 continents, something no other drag racer has achieved. He started racing over 35 years ago focusing on Top Alcohol and Top Fuel. Steve's achievements as owner/driver of his Top Alcohol car in Europe culminated in 7 British, 5 European and multiple Norwegian, Swedish, Austrian and German titles. In 1992 he became the first Top Alcohol racer outside the USA to run under 6 seconds and with this achievement decided to race the last 4 meetings in America. After struggling for the first 2 meetings trying to adapt to the US conditions he finally hit his stride qualifying No. 1 with a new track record at Phoenix Arizona. At the Winston Finals in Pomona, California, Steve qualified second and defeated 3 previous US champions to be beaten in the final by only a few thousandths.
The success continued after shipping the car to Austarlia, where Steve won the 1993 Australian Top Alcohol Championship and held the national speed and elapsed time record. In 1995 he again was Australian Nationals champion and was then invited to drive the Rapisarda Top Fuel dragster for the rest of the season. 1996 was Steve's first full year in Top Fuel, winning his third Australian Nationals title in four years. After several runner-up finishes he finally won his first Top Fuel Championship in 2001, repeating again in 2002 with two more Australian Nationals titles to his credit, joining an elite group of racers in achieving 5 Australian Nationals titles.
The years between 2003 and 2006 were pretty lean with only one win and four runner-up places for Rapisarda Racing. This resulted in a decision to leave and evolve his own team to again to be in charge of his own racing and success.
The decision to develop Read Speed Racing with Heather Bond proved to be a good one as 2007 was a very successful season with a win, a runner up and only one first round elimination.
